As a 20 year old university student Helen found herself unexpectedly pregnant, far from home and alone.  Without support or any clear idea of what to do next, the doctor booked her in for a pregnancy termination.

The lack of discussion about other options was cause for concern.  Helen chose to proceed with her pregnancy, became a single mum and later volunteered in supporting other young mums.  It was at this stage that Helen realised this wasn’t just her story, but the story of many women  across this nation.

There is a great tragedy occurring in Australia.

It is estimated there are more than 90,000 pregnancy terminations nation-wide every year – a number that is rapidly increasing. In contrast are Australia’s adoption statistics; Australia has a rapidly declining rate of adoption. In 2008-2009 there were 68 adoptions of Australian-born babies. The simple truth is there are no babies to adopt.

Many women are crying out for help and advice, but there are limited options for them when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. Abortion is promoted as the simple option, leaving many women alone and grieving when their experience isn’t so simple.  Adoption at this point in time is extremely rare and there is little or no support given other than occasional counselling.

The Babes Project, believes we can work together to be a part of the solution.  We will target this issue; offering support to women and families choosing to parent or place their child with an adoptive family.
